Do You Teach or Do You Educate?

This video was very interesting. It talks about the difference teaching and educating. The video states that teaching is to explain how something is done or to show someone concepts. An educator is someone who is a mentor. Someone who can be there for their students, and can also be there to encourage them. Someone who can be an advisor to them and be someone they can look up to.

I want to be an educator. I want to be there for my students and to be the person they can trust with anything. I want to help them not just learn the material but to find joy in learning it. I will make learning fun for my class. I always enjoyed subjects better when the teacher was engaged and made it exciting. This is something that is very important to me and I will make sure it’s used in my classroom. I want to be someone that they feel like cares about them and want the best for them. Not just someone who wants to teach to get paid but feels like I am there for them.

Don't Let Them Take Pencils Home

In this post he is using pencils as a metaphor for technology. He is talking about how people are trying to keep technology out of the classroom and how it is a bad idea. Students need to have technology in the classroom. They need to know how to use it because when they grow up they will be using it in the real world. Teaching them to use it now can help them in their future job.

Having technology in the classroom also makes the student more excited about learning it. It can make it more fun for students. He says that they won’t remember stuff if it’s just to pass a test and then it’s over. If you make it fun and make them want to learn it they will remember it for longer. He talks about how important technology in the classroom truly is .

  1. Hello Ashley,

It appears that you have Blog Post #9 split up into two posts, which you need to address. You'll need to combine the two posts and remove one from your blog. This is so we can find your posts and read everything together.

  2. Actually, it turns out that this isn't Blog Post #9 at all. It's supposed to be titled Blog Post #10. You definitely need to fix that. No wonder I was confused.

  3. Ashley,

I'm looking forward to being an educator. I believe it's important to understand the difference in the two positions. I thought this was a great video assignment because it breaks down exactly what the difference is between the two, Teacher vs. Educator.

I think you did a good job grasping the concept of what was being said in the post "Don't Let Them Take The Pencils Home". I did have to read the post a couple of times to understand what was being said but, it makes sense. I believe educators should embrace technology. If we look at the big picture, most children have immediate access to some of the latest technology for example, I Pad, laptop, cellphone with internet access. These things are used on a daily bases by most children. Why not incorporate these things into education? I believe we are better able to engage our students by using some of the things that they have become accustom to, this will encourage them to learn.
